CTG (Cardiotocography) Monitoring

Pregnancy is a journey filled with excitement. However, it is natural to experience moments of concern. Therefore, Athena Women’s Clinic offers CTG Monitoring (Cardiotocography) to check your baby’s wellbeing and provide you with immediate peace of mind.

Located in Bentley, our GP-led clinic provides a calm, safe environment for these essential antenatal checks, ensuring you never feel rushed or unheard.

What is CTG Monitoring?

Specifically, a Cardiotocograph (CTG) is a medical device that monitors your baby’s heart rate and your uterine contractions. It produces a continuous trace (graph) that helps our doctors assess your baby’s health accurately.

Furthermore, doctors commonly use this technology in the third trimester of pregnancy. Its primary goal is to ensure your baby is happy, active, and receiving enough oxygen.

When is CTG Monitoring Recommended?

Our doctors may recommend a CTG trace if:

  • Reduced Movements: You feel your baby is moving less than usual.

  • High-Risk Pregnancy: You have conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or pre-eclampsia.

  • Overdue Dates: Your pregnancy has gone past your due date.

  • External Concerns: You have had a fall or a bump to your stomach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, absolutely. CTG uses sound waves (similar to an ultrasound) to detect the heartbeat. Moreover, it does not use radiation, so it is safe for frequent use.

A standard monitoring session takes between 20 and 30 minutes. However, if the baby is sleeping, we may need to monitor for a little longer until they wake up and become active.

What Happens During the Appointment?

The procedure is completely non-invasive and painless.

  1. Relax: You will recline in a comfortable chair in our private monitoring room.

  2. Sensors: Two round sensors (transducers) are placed on your abdomen, held in place by soft elastic belts.

    • One sensor monitors the baby’s heart rate.

    • The other monitors for any contractions.

  3. The Trace: The machine records the data on a paper graph for about 20 to 30 minutes.

  4. Review: Our GP will review the trace immediately to discuss the results with you.
